Earl Halbert Maxon

A kind, gentle and loyal friend, Earl Maxon died peacefully in his sleep on July 20, 2025. He was a loving brother, uncle, cousin and stepfather. A spinner of fun stories and jokes, Earl will be remembered as a really good guy who made us laugh. Born in El Paso on October 10, 1948 to Orell and Howard Maxon, he was the younger brother of Jim and Jack.

Earl attended Mesita Elementary School, El Paso High School (eighth grade) and Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. After Andover, he earned a business degree from the University of Texas-Austin where he was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

Earl began his business life in El Paso at the State National Bank, before spending most of his career in the restaurant and hospitality industry. He was a partner with his brother Jack, in JAXON’S and THE OTHER BROTHER, in downtown El Paso. Earl then owned and operated SWENSEN’S ICE CREAM PARLOR on El Paso’s westside, followed by serving as managing partner of three COUNTY LINE BARBEQUE RESTAURANTS in Denver, Colorado Springs, and Oklahoma City. Finally, he devoted the last years of his career, along with his brother Jim, consulting in organization and leadership development for clients in the Borderplex region.

Known as Earl the Pearl, Pearlie, Pifas, or “E” to his many friends and family, his lighthearted and jovial nature connected with all. Having a meal and fellowship with family and friends was a favorite pastime, as were two additional passions, jazz and college football. Earl amassed a very large collection of both vinyl and CD recordings, and he attended jazz concerts all over the country. His knowledge of jazz and 50’s and 60’s rock and roll amazed everyone. Earl’s other passion was college football, principally the Texas Longhorns. From year to year, Earl would know the name of each player and their position on the Longhorn team.

Earl was Past President of the Rotary Club of Littleton, Colorado. In El Paso, he served on the boards of The Sunturians and the El Paso Symphony Orchestra. He was a devoted member of LOS CABALLEROS, a men's social club.

Earl is survived by his brothers Jim (Candace) and Jack (Carroll), Brenda Maxon and stepchildren Travis Mendel (Beth), Camille Lavezo (Jonathon) and Harley Mendel (Patrick), nephews James Maxon, Matt Girard Maxon, nieces Melanie Maxon, Caroline North, and Allyson Kopel, as well as many cousins who called him Uncle Earl. Finally, we must acknowledge Earl’s best pal, Jake, an Australian Shepherd dog, who was his constant companion in later years.

A casual celebration of Earl’s life will be held at noon on Sunday, August 17th at Ardovino’s Desert Crossing, in Sunland Park, NM.

Memorial Contributions may be sent to the Animal Rescue League of El Paso, 7256 La Junta, Canutillo TX 79835 or the charity of your choosing.
